GEO vs SEO vs AEO: What Is the Difference?

SEO, AEO and GEO are three labels for related work: getting found in search results, getting picked as the direct answer, and getting cited inside AI-written answers. They overlap heavily, and one well-built page can serve all three. This guide explains each term, shows where they differ, and tells you what to do first. It is part of our series on AI search optimization.

Alt text: Three overlapping circles representing SEO, AEO and GEO with a shared centre of clear, trustworthy content

AI image prompt

"Premium dark-theme technology illustration, 16:9. Three large translucent glowing circles overlapping like a Venn diagram, in cyan, blue and soft green, with a bright shared centre where they all intersect. Faint search bar, answer card and chat bubble icons float inside each circle. Deep navy background (#080b14), subtle grid, clean corporate style, no text, no logos, no people."

Quick answer

  • SEO (search engine optimization): Earn rankings and clicks in search results.
  • AEO (answer engine optimization): Be the direct answer to a specific question, such as a featured snippet or a voice answer.
  • GEO (generative engine optimization): Be used and cited inside answers written by AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. See what GEO means.
  • How they relate: Overlap is high. SEO is the foundation; AEO and GEO add answer-first writing, evidence and entity clarity.
  • Google's view: Its guidance says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO. It does not ask for separate GEO or AEO work.
  • What to do first: Fix SEO basics, then make key pages answer-first and evidence-rich, then test in AI tools.

The three terms in plain language

  • SEO: Improving your website so search engines can crawl, understand and rank it. It covers technical health, content, and authority (links and mentions).
  • AEO: Writing and structuring pages so a search or answer feature can lift a short, direct answer from them. Think featured snippets, "People also ask" and voice answers.
  • GEO: Making your content usable by AI tools that write combined answers from several sources. The term comes from a 2023 research paper presented at KDD 2024.

One-line memory aid: SEO gets you ranked, AEO gets you quoted as the answer, GEO gets you cited inside an AI-written answer.

Where they overlap

  • Same foundation: A page that can't be crawled and indexed can't win any of the three.
  • Same writing skill: Clear headings, direct answers and short paragraphs help all three.
  • Same trust signals: Real authors, accurate business details and cited sources help all three.
  • Same page can serve all three: You rarely need separate pages for SEO, AEO and GEO.
  • Practical takeaway: Don't split your budget into three. Build good pages once and check them against all three goals.

Where they really differ

  • What counts as a win: SEO wins a click. AEO wins the answer slot, often with no click. GEO wins a mention or citation, which may or may not send traffic.
  • How predictable it is: SEO rankings are fairly stable. AI answers vary between runs and change month to month.
  • Where the proof lives: SEO proof is on your own site and in Search Console. GEO proof is partly off your site: how often others mention you.
  • Tactics with the most GEO-specific evidence: In the original GEO research, adding citations, quotations and statistics gave the largest visibility gains. Results varied by domain.
  • Skill mix: SEO is technical and editorial. GEO adds testing questions across AI tools and keeping your business facts consistent across the web.

Other terms you will see

  • LLM SEO / LLMO: Another name for optimizing for large language model answers. In practice it overlaps with GEO.
  • AIO: Used in two ways: AI optimization in general, or Google's AI Overviews specifically. Check the context.
  • GSO (generative search optimization): Used by some writers interchangeably with GEO.
  • AI SEO: An umbrella phrase for SEO work aimed at AI answers.

Our usage: We use SEO for the foundation, AEO for answer-first formatting and GEO for the AI-citation goal. Authors differ: some treat AEO as a subset of GEO, others as the older, narrower term. What matters is the work, not the label.

What Google says

  • Same systems: Google says its AI features in Search rely on the same ranking and quality systems as normal Search.
  • No separate discipline: Its guidance treats optimizing for AI features as SEO, not as a new field.
  • No special files needed: It says files like llms.txt, special markup or rewriting content only for AI are not required for Google Search.
  • Eligibility: Pages must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. Inclusion is never guaranteed.

What this means: For Google, the SEO versus GEO split is mostly a marketing label. Other platforms, such as ChatGPT search and Perplexity, have their own crawlers, so access and off-site presence matter there.

Which one should you focus on first?

Three-step path from SEO foundation to answer-first pages to AI citation testing
Image slot 3 · 1200x800 pxseo-aeo-geo-which-first.webp

Alt text: Three-step path from SEO foundation to answer-first pages to AI citation testing

AI image prompt

"Three glass steps ascending left to right on a dark navy background, each with a simple glowing icon: a wrench and gear (foundation), a speech bubble with a check (answer-first), a sparkle AI core with link lines (citation testing). A thin cyan path connects them. Minimal, rounded, premium, no text, no logos."

  • Step 1 — SEO foundation: Make sure your key pages are crawlable, indexed, fast and accurate. Without this, nothing else works.
  • Step 2 — Answer-first pages (AEO): Add a short, direct answer under each main question heading, then explain.
  • Step 3 — Evidence and entity clarity (GEO): Add named sources and real figures. Keep your name, services and address consistent everywhere.
  • Step 4 — Test: Ask your real customer questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity each month and note who is cited.
  • If you have few pages: Fix your top service pages first. Don't spread thin across the whole site.
  • If you are local (for example a Mumbai business): Add your Google Business Profile to Step 3. Accurate local facts are often what AI tools reuse.

How to measure each one

  • SEO: Rankings, impressions, clicks and leads in Search Console and analytics.
  • AEO: Whether you appear in featured snippets and "People also ask" for your target questions. Check manually or with a rank tool that tracks answer features.
  • GEO: Run the same list of customer questions in AI tools each month. Record whether you are mentioned, cited and described correctly. Run each more than once, because answers vary.
  • Search Console AI report: Google's generative AI report shows impressions for AI features. It has limits, so treat it as one signal.
  • Referral traffic: Look for visits from AI platforms in analytics, knowing some visits aren't labelled.
  • Be honest in reports: These are signals, not proof of cause.

Mistakes when choosing between them

  • Treating them as rivals: You don't have to pick one. They share the same foundation.
  • Hiring three vendors: Check that anyone selling "GEO" or "AEO" separately explains what they do beyond good SEO.
  • Chasing a label: Rebranding old SEO work as "GEO" changes nothing.
  • Skipping the basics: Blocked, slow or unindexed pages can't win any of the three.
  • Believing guarantees: No one can promise a mention in an AI answer.
  • Using unsourced numbers: Several popular comparison pages quote cost, timeline and growth figures without naming a source. Treat those figures with caution.

Limits and honest caveats

  • Terms are not standardised. Different authors define AEO and GEO differently, and some treat one as part of the other.
  • GEO evidence is early. The main academic study used a benchmark of about 10,000 queries; results varied by domain and may not match live engines.
  • Platforms change. What works on one AI tool may not work on another, or next month.
  • No official ranking. There is no official "GEO ranking" to track, so measurement is by sampling.
  • Our own bias. We sell AI search optimization services. We have tried to describe the work as it is, including what it can't promise.

They overlap, but they are not identical. AEO focuses on being the direct answer to a specific question. GEO focuses on being used and cited inside AI-written answers. Some authors treat AEO as part of GEO; in practice one well-built page serves both.

No. GEO builds on SEO. A page still needs to be crawlable, indexed and trustworthy. Google's own guidance says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO.

Usually not. Most of the work is shared. Start with SEO basics, add answer-first writing and evidence, then test in AI tools. Only add separate work where you have a clear reason.

SEO fundamentals. Then make your most important pages answer-first with named sources. After that, test your customer questions in AI tools.

Pick one important service page. Put a direct answer in the first two sentences, add a named source for any figure, and make sure your business details are accurate. Then test related questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.

Ask the same real customer questions in each AI tool every month, more than once, and log whether you are mentioned, cited and described correctly. Add Search Console and referral data as supporting signals.

They can reduce clicks on some queries. Studies differ in size and method, and they show correlation, not proof. See our guide on AI Overviews and click-through rate.

It helps search engines understand your page, but there is no proof that special markup makes AI tools cite you. Google says no special markup is needed for its AI features. See our guide to schema markup for AI search.

Yes, especially for local and specialist questions. Clear pages, accurate business details and real expertise matter more than size. Large brands have an advantage in general topics, not in your local niche.

They are overlapping labels for similar work. Pick one and stay consistent.

There is no reliable, independent data on timelines. Some pages quote fixed time ranges without naming a source. Changes need to be recrawled, and AI answers vary, so test monthly and judge over a few months.

It is used two ways: AI optimization in general, and Google's AI Overviews specifically. Check how the author uses it.
