How to Get Cited by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity
Nobody can guarantee a citation in ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity. You can, however, make your pages easy to access, easy to quote and easy to trust, and then check whether it is working. This guide covers what each platform can see, what to change on your pages, and how to test. It is part of our series on AI search optimization.

"Premium dark-theme technology illustration, 16:9. Three glass chat windows side by side in cyan, blue and green glow, each showing abstract answer lines and a small numbered source chip, with thin light lines connecting all three source chips to one glowing website card at the bottom. Deep navy background (#080b14), subtle grid, minimal corporate style, no readable text, no logos, no people."
Quick answer
- Let the right crawlers in: Search-style bots such as OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search) and PerplexityBot need access. Training bots are a separate choice.
- Be indexable: Gemini and Google's AI features use Google's index. Perplexity and ChatGPT search use their own indexes and other sources.
- Write quotable pages: Put a direct answer first, then evidence with named sources.
- Be consistent off-site: Your name, services and address should match across your site, Google Business Profile and directories.
- Earn mentions: Reviews, listings and mentions on trusted sites give AI tools more to rely on.
- Test monthly: Ask real customer questions in each tool and log who is cited. Run each more than once.
How each assistant finds and cites sources
- ChatGPT: When it searches the web, it draws on a search index and shows linked sources. OpenAI documents separate crawlers for different jobs (see Step 1). It does not publish a full list of every source it uses.
- Gemini: Google's AI features rely on Google's normal Search systems. Pages must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet.
- Perplexity: It searches the web for each question and shows numbered citations, so crawl access and clear passages matter directly.
- All three: They pick passages that answer the question clearly and come from sources they can reach and trust.
- Variation: The same question can return different sources on different days. One result proves little.
Step 1: Check which AI crawlers can reach you

Alt text: A robots.txt gate with three crawler icons, two allowed through and one blocked
AI image prompt
"A glowing glass gate on a dark navy background with a small robots.txt file card above it. Three small bot icons approach: two pass through in green, one stopped in red. Cyan and blue accents, minimal, rounded, premium, no readable text, no logos."
- Open your robots.txt: Visit
yourdomain.com/robots.txtand read it. Many sites block bots by accident. - OAI-SearchBot: OpenAI says it is used so sites can appear in ChatGPT search results. Blocking it can stop that.
- GPTBot: OpenAI says it is used for model training. Blocking it is a separate decision from search.
- ChatGPT-User: Used for user-initiated actions, such as visiting a page when someone asks. OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to it.
- PerplexityBot: Perplexity says it surfaces and links sites in its search results and is not used to train foundation models.
- Perplexity-User: Visits pages when a person asks a question. Perplexity says robots.txt generally does not apply to it.
- Googlebot: Needed for Google Search and its AI features. Google-Extended is a separate control for some Gemini uses and does not affect Search inclusion.
- Also check: Firewalls, CDN bot rules and login walls can block crawlers even when robots.txt allows them.
- Allow time: OpenAI notes that changes to robots.txt can take around a day to take effect.
Our AI search optimization service includes a check of which of these crawlers your robots.txt allows.
Step 2: Make key pages quotable
- Question headings: Use H2 or H3 headings that match how customers ask, such as "How much does CCTV installation cost in Mumbai?" if you can answer it honestly.
- Answer first: Put a one- or two-sentence direct answer under the heading, then explain.
- Short sections: Keep paragraphs short and use bullets for lists and steps.
- Self-contained passages: Each section should make sense if lifted out on its own.
- Tables for comparisons: Use real HTML tables, not images of tables.
- Plain text: Keep key facts in text, not only in images, videos or tabs that need a click.
- Fresh dates: Show a real "last updated" date and update the page when facts change.
- Fast, readable pages: Slow or script-heavy pages are harder to crawl and read.
Step 3: Add evidence, not claims
- Name your sources: When you quote a figure, say who published it and when, and link to it.
- Use your own data: Real project counts, timelines, case notes and photos are hard for others to copy.
- Add real authorship: Show who wrote or reviewed the page and what their experience is.
- Be specific: "Cat6A cabling for a 40-seat office" is more useful than "high-quality solutions".
- Say what you don't do: Honest limits make a page more trustworthy to readers and tools.
- Research note: The original GEO study found that adding citations, quotations and statistics improved visibility in its tests. Results varied by domain, so treat it as a direction, not a guarantee.
Step 4: Keep your business facts consistent
- One name: Use the exact same business name everywhere.
- Same address and phone: Match your website, Google Business Profile and directories.
- Clear service list: Describe what you do and where, in the same words on each platform.
- About and contact pages: Make them complete: who you are, where you work, how to reach you.
- Structured data: Add Organization and LocalBusiness markup that matches the visible page. It helps machines read your details, but it isn't a citation trigger. See our guide to schema for AI search.
- Check for conflicts: Old addresses or phone numbers on forgotten listings can confuse tools.
Step 5: Earn mentions beyond your website
- Reviews: Genuine reviews on Google and trade platforms give tools more to rely on. Never buy or fake them.
- Directories: Claim accurate listings in relevant business directories.
- Industry mentions: Contribute useful comments, case studies or data to trade publications and partners.
- Community answers: Where it fits the rules of the platform, answer questions helpfully and disclose who you are.
- Press and partners: Mentions from partners, vendors and local organisations add credibility.
- Why it matters: Several vendor studies report that brand mentions on other sites correlate with AI visibility. Correlation is not proof, so treat the claim carefully.
Step 6: Test and log your results

Alt text: A simple table logging whether a brand was mentioned or cited across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity
AI image prompt
"A glass spreadsheet card on a dark navy background with rows of small check, cross and dash icons and three coloured column markers for three AI assistants. Cyan, blue and green accents, subtle glow, minimal, no readable text, no logos."
- Build a question list: Write 15 to 25 real questions your customers ask, including local and comparison questions.
- Ask each tool: Run every question in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, with web search on where it is optional.
- Repeat: Run each question at least three times, because answers vary.
- Log the result: Record whether you were mentioned, cited with a link, described correctly, and which competitors appeared.
- Same conditions: Use a logged-out or fresh session where you can, so past chats don't skew results.
- Monthly rhythm: Test monthly and compare trends, not single answers.
- Add other signals: Check Search Console and analytics for AI-referred visits, remembering some are not labelled.

Mumbai and India: local questions
- Think in local questions: Customers ask things like "best CCTV installer in Andheri" or "AMC for office networking in Mumbai".
- Be specific about place: Name the areas you serve, and mention them naturally on service pages.
- Google Business Profile first: Keep categories, services, hours and photos accurate.
- Language: If your customers ask in Hindi, Marathi or mixed language, include those phrases where they read naturally.
- Honest comparisons: Local comparison pages that explain trade-offs can be useful, but don't claim "best" without evidence.
- Reviews from real customers: Ask satisfied clients to describe the service in their own words.
Myths and shortcuts to avoid
- "Add llms.txt and you'll be cited." Google says it does not need one for Search. We have not seen reliable evidence that it drives citations elsewhere.
- "Stuff your page with keywords." The GEO research found keyword stuffing performed poorly.
- "Buy mentions." Paid or fake mentions risk penalties and trust.
- "Block all bots to protect content." That also removes you from AI search.
- "One test proves it." Answers vary; one screenshot is an anecdote.
- "Guaranteed ChatGPT ranking." No honest provider can promise one.
Limits and honest caveats
- Platforms change. Sources, features and crawler names change; check each vendor's documentation.
- We can't see inside the models. Much advice, including ours, is based on documentation, research and testing, not on published ranking rules.
- Some studies are vendor-run. Several widely quoted statistics come from SEO tool vendors and are not independently verified.
- Authority takes time. A new business may not be cited quickly, whatever it does on its pages.
- Bias note. We sell AI search optimization. We have tried to describe the work, including what can't be promised.

Frequently asked questions
Still have a question? Ask our teamAllow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, make sure your pages are public and fast, write direct answers with named sources, keep your business details consistent, and earn mentions elsewhere. Then test your customer questions in ChatGPT and log the results. No tactic guarantees a citation.
OpenAI describes GPTBot as the crawler for training and OAI-SearchBot as the one for search. Blocking GPTBot alone should not remove you from search results, but check your current robots.txt and OpenAI's documentation, because details can change.
Allow PerplexityBot, publish clear current passages that answer specific questions, and make sure your pages load without scripts hiding the content. Perplexity shows numbered citations, so you can test directly.
Be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, and follow normal SEO best practice. Google says no special files or markup are needed, and inclusion is never guaranteed.
Reputable crawlers say they follow it, but it is a request, not a technical block. Firewalls and server rules can also block bots even when robots.txt allows them.
Google says it is not needed for its AI features. Evidence that it improves citations elsewhere is weak, so treat it as optional at best.
They appear to matter, mainly for trust and consistency, though most evidence is correlational and vendor-run. Genuine reviews and accurate listings are worth having anyway.
There is no reliable independent timeline. Pages must be recrawled, and answers vary. Test monthly and judge over several months.
Yes, especially for specific and local questions where large sites have little to say. Authority builds slowly, so focus on accuracy, clarity and real expertise.
Sometimes. Citations can drive visits, but some answers satisfy users without a click. Track both visits and enquiries. See AI Overviews and click-through rate.
No. Citations in organic answers are not for sale. Treat anyone selling a guaranteed placement with suspicion. Ads, where offered, are labelled separately.
Mostly no. The same fundamentals serve all three: access, clear answers, evidence and consistent facts. Check each platform's crawler and documentation, then test each one.
